Indiana Pork is strengthening its approach to swine health and biosecurity as producers look toward 2027, with a renewed focus on disease prevention, industry collaboration, and the potential elimination of costly viruses.
Indiana Pork has formalized its Swine Health Advisory Committee, bringing greater coordination to efforts aimed at protecting the state’s pork industry from existing and emerging disease threats.
Stacy Herr, director of producer education for Indiana Pork, says diseases such as Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) and Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) continue to create significant production challenges.
The committee will help facilitate conversations among producers and industry stakeholders about practical disease prevention strategies, including whether eliminating PEDV within Indiana could be achievable and economically beneficial.
Could PEDV Elimination Become a Statewide Goal?
One of the questions under consideration is whether Indiana’s pork industry could coordinate efforts to eliminate PEDV.
Herr emphasized that disease prevention requires an approach that reflects the unique circumstances of individual production systems while identifying opportunities for broader industry cooperation.
