The National Farm Products Council, commonly referred to as the Farm Products Council of Canada, works on behalf of the Government of Canada to provide oversight of the national supply management agencies for poultry and eggs, as well as the national promotion-research agencies for farm products. The National Farm Products Council administers two federal statutes: the Farm Products Agencies Act and the Agricultural Products Marketing Act.
As part of its mandate, the National Farm Products Council oversees national marketing and promotion‑research agencies by reviewing regulatory proposals such as quota regulations and levy orders, supervising agency operations, and advising the Minister of Agriculture and Agri‑Food on matters related to the agencies established under the Farm Products Agencies Act.
National Farm Products Council members attend regular Council meetings, offering insight and guidance on issues under consideration and contributing to collective decision‑making. At the request of the Chairperson, members may also serve on Complaint Examination Boards or sit on public hearing panels, helping to review complaints and assess matters brought forward under the Council’s regulatory authority. In addition, members may represent the National Farm Products Council in discussions with stakeholder organizations, agricultural boards, and industry committees, ensuring that Council perspectives and oversight obligations are reflected across the national supply management and promotion‑research systems.
