Navigating The Options In Used Farm Equipment Markets

Venturing into the used farm equipment market can be challenging. There are a number of equipment options that may or may not meet the needs of your farm, as well as several outlets that you can use to find or purchase farm machinery. Once you’ve identified a potential purchase, you want to ensure what you’re buying is worth the investment. Then you want to secure the purchase as quickly and securely as possible, especially if you hope to use it right away.

To aid farmers in understanding how to navigate buying used farm equipment markets, MSU Extension has released a new bulletin: E-3516 Used Farm Equipment Markets: Navigating the Options. This publication provides insight on how to research potential options as well as an overview of how used equipment markets work and the buying channels available. Also included are the steps involved in equipment inspection, price negotiation, and securing a successful purchase. The publication wraps up with information on how to protect and evaluate your investment to aid in future farm equipment buying decisions.

Also be sure to check out the companion bulletin: E-3515 Used Farm Equipment Markets: Planning the Purchase, which explores the process of planning your farm’s next equipment purchase, starting with determining what farm equipment is the right fit for your farm needs.
