NCBA's Craig Uden Says Trans Pacific Partnership Is Crucial To U.S. Beef Industry

While it is unlikely Congress will ratify the Trans Pacific Partnership this calendar year, Craig Uden, president elect of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, says the trade agreement remains at the forefront of his mind.

U.S. cattle producers currently pay a 38 percent tariff to Japan - its largest exporter - at a cost of over $100 million a year. In comparison, Australia has signed a bilateral agreement with Japan and significantly decreased its tariff. 
 
Radio Oklahoma Network Farm Director Ron Hays recently talked with Uden who says an agreement like TPP would help level the playing field when it comes to exporting American beef.
 
“We have to be the ones who help write the rules or we are going to be boxed out while these other countries write their own agreements one-on-one,” Uden says.

On-demand webinar, hosted by the Meat Institute, experts from the USDA, National Pork Board (NPB) and Merck Animal Health introduced the no-cost 840 RFID tag program—a five-year initiative supported through African swine fever (ASF) preparedness efforts. Beginning in Fall 2025, eligible sow producers, exhibition swine owners and State Animal Health Officials can order USDA-funded RFID tags through Merck A2025-10_nimal Health.

NPB staff also highlighted an additional initiative, funded by USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Veterinary Services through NPB, that helps reduce the cost of transitioning to RFID tags across the swine industry and strengthens national traceability efforts.
