Pulse Industry Welcomes Two-year Extension Of Tariff Relief On Canadian Peas

Pulse Canada welcomed today’s announcement that Canada and China have agreed to extend the suspension of China’s 100% tariff on Canadian peas by two years, to the end of 2028. The extension was agreed at the Canada–China Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETC) meeting in Beijing, co-led by the Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade, and China’s Minister of Commerce, Wang Wentao. It marked the first time the JETC had met at the ministerial level.

Pulse Canada appreciates the efforts of Prime Minister Carney, Minister Sidhu, Minister MacDonald, and the officials who have kept Canada’s engagement with China active and constructive throughout 2026. Following the Prime Minister’s visit to Beijing in January, China suspended the tariff effective March 1, 2026, through to the end of this year. This temporary reprieve allowed Canadian growers and exporters to send over 975,000 MT of peas to China between March and September.

“This extension is welcome news for Canadian pulse growers and for the entire value chain,” said Shane Strydhorst, Chair of Pulse Canada. “When the tariff came off in March, we said our focus would turn to making that access permanent. Two more years of predictable access to China is real progress toward that goal, and we will keep working with government and our customers until the job is done.”

The Canadian pulse sector contributes billions of dollars annually to the national economy and supports tens of thousands of jobs, particularly in rural communities. A longer window of tariff-free access will support the pulse value chain and reinforce Canada’s role as the preferred supplier of pulses to China.
