Research herds go on the block this fall

Cattle from closing federal research stations are being sold or relocated this fall.

Some animals were sold earlier this year, including about 130 head from the Nappan Research Farm in Nova Scotia. Fifteen of those were heifers bought by a local stockyard for breeding.

Nappan cows bred before sale

The Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) and the Maritime Beef Council (MBC) issued a statement late last month welcoming the decision to breed the cow herd at Nappan before its sale.

Agriculture Canada confirmed the cows would be bred prior to sale. Ninety-six cows and 93 calves are to be sold this fall.
