Saskatchewan Agriculture Reports Substantial Harvest Progress Over the Past Week

Saskatchewan Agriculture Reports favorable weather over the past week allowed substantial harvest progress.Saskatchewan Agriculture released its  crop report yesterday for the  period from October 13th to October 19th.Crops Extension Specialist Davidson Ugheoke says harvest is close to complete.

Quote-Davidson Ugheoke-Saskatchewan Agriculture:

During this last reporting period we did record tremendous favourable weather which allowed producers to make good progress in harvest.Across the province harvest is currently at 97 percent complete with only small acres of later seeded crops left out there in the field.Harvest is 99 percent complete in the southwest and the west central regions.

The northern regions are currently at 97 percent while the east central and the southeast regions are 96 and 95 percent complete respectively. As a result of those two storms, we had early and the excess moisture that was retained on the field, there was a little bit of a delay in seeding which extended the growing period into now.

On the average by this time five and ten years ago we were done with harvest. However, this doesn't reflect into the yield potentials because from the yield numbers we received, they are average or a little bit above average of the ten-and five-year averages. In terms of the quality, because some of the earlier seeded crops were exposed to excess moisture after maturity, there was some degrading however, that didn't affect the later seeded crops. We did observe some sprouting in certain places and then bleaching in some crops.

Ugheoke says, if this weather prevails, growers will be able to wrap up harvest before snow sets in.
