SDSU Extension Invites Public to Free Winter Wheat Field Tours

South Dakota State University Extension invites all wheat producers, agronomists and agricultural professionals to attend the upcoming Winter Wheat Variety Tours on June 9, 2026.

These free tours will be at two SDSU Crop Performance Testing locations, where winter wheat varieties are evaluated within localized field conditions across South Dakota. The first is by Hayes starting at 9 a.m. MT, and the second by Wall at noon MT.

Clarence Winter, SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist, said this event is a unique opportunity to walk the plots, observe variety performance firsthand and engage in meaningful discussions about agronomic characteristics such as disease resistance, drought tolerance, maturity and yield potential.

During the tour, SDSU Extension specialists will provide insights into current trial data and highlight factors producers should consider when selecting varieties for the upcoming season.

“Each wheat variety has its own strengths and weaknesses, and choosing the right one is a critical decision for farm profitability and risk management,” Winter said.

The program will also allow time for farmer networking and a question-and-answer session with SDSU Extension personnel. Attendees will also have a chance to win a soil probe.
