Shell Joins Forces with Northern Nutrients

Shell Trading Canada has joined hands with Northern Nutrients to expand the company's fertilizer production facility near Saskatoon. This new strategic partnership marks the beginning of a joint venture aimed at tripling the site’s annual capacity from 50,000 metric tonnes to 150,000 metric tonnes.

Founded in 2016, Northern Nutrients has become a key player in the agriculture industry by delivering innovative fertilizer solutions. The company’s facility uses Shell’s advanced Thiogro Technology to create high-quality nitrogen and sulphur-based fertilizers. Its flagship product, Arctic S, contains 11% nitrogen and 75% micronized elemental sulphur, offering improved efficiency for modern farming needs.

This expansion responds to growing market demand for enhanced fertilizers. Since the local launch of Arctic S in 2022, the product has received strong support from retailers and farmers across North America.

“Since local production of Arctic S began in 2022, the market response across North America has exceeded our expectations making now the perfect time to expand our production capacity, and Shell the perfect partner to do it with.” says Ross Guenther, CEO & co-owner of Northern Nutrients. Northern Nutrients Co-Owner Rob Owens adds “Bringing Shell Trading Canada on as a strategic joint venture partner makes sense on multiple levels to continue the momentum Northern Nutrients has built over the past few years.”

Rob Owens, co-owner of the company, added that the partnership with Shell aligns perfectly with their growth goals and industry impact.

The expanded facility is expected to create about 60 full-time construction jobs and additional full-time roles in operations. The collaboration emphasizes both companies' commitment to delivering top-tier fertilizer solutions and supporting agricultural sustainability.

As demand for sulphur-enriched fertilizers continues to rise, this joint venture positions both companies to better serve farmers and contribute to agricultural productivity across North America.
