United States Hog Inventory Down Slightly

As of June 1, there were 73.7 million hogs and pigs on U.S. farms, down slightly from June 2025 and down slightly from March 1, 2026, according to the Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report published today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Other key findings in the report were:

Of the 73.7 million hogs and pigs, 67.8 million were market hogs, while 5.88 million were kept for breeding.
Between March and May 2026, 33.5 million pigs were weaned on U.S. farms, up slightly from the same time period one year earlier.
From March through May 2026, U.S. hog and pig producers weaned an average of 11.87 pigs per litter.
U.S. hog producers intend to have 2.90 million sows farrow between June and August 2026, and 2.89 million sows farrow between September and November 2026.
Iowa hog producers accounted for the largest inventory among the states, at 24.7 million head. Minnesota had the second largest inventory at 9.30 million head. North Carolina was third with 7.20 million head.

To obtain an accurate measurement of the U.S. swine industry, NASS surveyed 4,254 operators across the nation during the first half of June. The data collected were received online through NASS’s Respondent Portal, by mail, telephone and through face-to-face interviews.

In this episode, Dr. Aline Remus (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada) explains how precision feeding is helping producers improve efficiency, reduce feed costs and lower environmental impacts while supporting animal health and welfare.

As part of Swine Cluster 4 - Activity 8, this research is advancing precision livestock farming by tailoring nutrition to the needs of individual pigs or groups of pigs. The project aims to reduce feed costs, decrease greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient losses, and develop practical precision feeding systems that producers can confidently adopt on-farm.

By bringing together researchers from across Canada and around the world, this work is helping transform innovative research into practical solutions for a more sustainable and competitive Canadian pork sector.
