USDA Announces Construction Of U.S. Sterile Fly Production Facility

USDA announced late last week it would be ramping up construction of a sterile fly production and distribution facility at Moore Air Base in South Texas as part of the continued efforts to combat the spread of New World screwworm (NWS). Once constructed, the facility will boost weekly output of flies to more than 300 million, which is crucial to stopping the northern incursion and pushing NWS back into Central America.

The sterile insect technique remains the most proven, science-based method for eradication.
