West River Field School

SDSU Extension will host the West River Field School on Tuesday, June 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the SDSU West River Research Farm (13370 Alkali Road, Sturgis, SD 57785) near Sturgis, South Dakota.

Information presented at this event will focus on the diverse nature of agriculture in western South Dakota and provide attendees with an opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment with SDSU Extension specialists. Certified crop advisor educational credits are available during the day, and reference material will be provided to attendees. This event is free of charge and includes a catered lunch. 

Presentations will cover the following topics, with an optional farm tour offered at the end of the day.

  • Grazing cover crops/soil health – Dave Ollila and Tanse Hermann, NRCS
  • Entomology – Patrick Wagner, SDSU Extension Entomology Field Specialist
  • Climate Update – Laura Edwards, SDSU Extension State Climatologist
  • Drone Demonstration – Logan Vandermark, SDSU Extension Precision Livestock Field Specialist, and Ira Parsons, SDSU Assistant Professor
  • Optional Farm Tour – Chris Graham, Associate Professor and SDSU Extension Agronomist
