WIU Alumnus Matthew Montgomery Honored with 2024 Illinois Certified Crop Adviser Award

Western Illinois University alumnus Matthew Montgomery, of Chatham, has been named the recipient of the prestigious 2024 Illinois Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Illinois Farm Bureau and the Certified Crop Adviser Board. This award recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional service and innovation in nutrient management, soil and water management, integrated pest management and crop production while fostering economically and environmentally sustainable farming practices.

Montgomery's groundbreaking work identifying and addressing red crown rot in soybeans has earned him widespread recognition in the agricultural community. His research has brought attention to this often-misidentified disease, prompting agriscience businesses to invest resources in developing new management practices. By enhancing awareness and solutions for red crown rot, Montgomery is directly contributing to improved crop health and productivity for soybean farmers.

Beyond his research, Montgomery is a trusted resource for growers, providing expert guidance during every stage of the planting, growing and harvest cycles. Farmers frequently rely on his insight to make informed field decisions that balance economic efficiency with environmental stewardship.

A passionate advocate for education and mentorship, Montgomery maintains a strong connection to WIU. He regularly speaks to agronomy classes, sharing his expertise and experiences, and offers job-shadowing opportunities to students and young professionals interested in pursuing careers in agronomy.

Montgomery will be formally recognized at the Illinois Agricultural Association (IAA) Annual Meeting and the Illinois CCA Conference. As the recipient of the Illinois CCA Award, he will also be considered for the International Certified Crop Adviser Award, further highlighting his contributions to the global agricultural community.
