Governor General Georges Vanier’s throne speech on Jan. 14, 1960 outlined Prime Minister John Diefenbaker’s plans for governing and opened the third session of Canada’s 24th Parliament.
The government promised to enact laws to help producers remain profitable.
“Our farms have yielded surpluses which have necessitated a revision of existing measures to stabilize farm prices to ensure that their basic purpose is achieved without the wasteful accumulation of surplus stocks,” Vanier said.
In addition, the federal government committed to introducing legislation to help Prairie farmers overcome “severe, unseasonal snow,” which interrupted harvest.
