On Jan. 17, 1935, Vere Ponsonby (pictured), Canada’s governor general, delivered a throne speech to set out Prime Minister Richard Bennett’s plan for the sixth session of Canada’s 17th Parliament.

The governor general highlighted two ag bills the government passed during the previous Parliament.

The Natural Products Marketing Act, passed in 1934, helped lay the groundwork for nationwide industry boards to have regulation control. The next year, however, the Supreme Court of Canada overruled the bill because the provinces should be given the right to market their own farm products.

Governor General Ponsonby also spoke about the Farmers’ Creditors Arrangement Act, which provided producers with a way, at little expense, to arrange for debt liquidation.
