Monsanto attempted to purchase Syngenta in May 2015 for a cool $45 billion. Once Syngenta rejected the offer, Monsanto tabled a deal in June with an additional $2 billion reverse breakup fee, bringing the total bid to $47 billion. Syngenta also rejected the second offer, citing the only difference between bids was a “wholly inadequate reverse regulatory break fee.”
