Sailors would get tattoos of chickens or pigs on their feet to protect themselves from drowning.

When ships capsized, chickens and pigs usually survived. They survived the wreck, it’s believed, because God took pity on the animals since they couldn’t swim. These stories led to the superstition about the protective tattoos.
