Voters head to the polls on Oct. 28

Saskatchewanians will vote for their next government on Oct. 28.

Premier Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan Party are looking for another majority government, while Carla Beck and the NDP are hoping to form government for the first time since Lorne Calvert served as premier from 2001 to 2007.

Both parties have released their election platforms, and Farms.com is going through them to find out what each party has in store for ag and rural Saskatchewan.

First up is the NDP.

In its platform, titled “It’s Time for Change,” the party has a section dedicated to ag and rural development.

The NDP’s specific ag commitments are to:

  • Investigate and crack down on illegal foreign farmland ownership and establish a registry to increase transparency.
  • Develop a carbon offset program for ranchers and ensure the federal government supports it.
  • Work to improve livestock business risk management programs to support fairness, protection and flexibility for farmers.
  • Support the development of a larger meat processing industry.

Within this section, the NDP also promises to expand cellular service and internet connectivity through rural communities and implement better planning of road infrastructure.

Carla Beck’s NDP also has two rural promises in other parts of the platform.

In the section on healthcare, for example, the party commits to “keep rural emergency rooms across the province open.”

The other commitment is to introduce programs to support new business development in urban and rural communities.

Voters in B.C. are also heading to the polls in October 2024.
