Balanced protein and energy improve milk yield and farm profitability
Dairy nutrition is becoming more complex as farmers aim to improve animal performance while managing rising costs. Today, feed ingredients must provide not only protein but also energy and essential amino acids to support better efficiency and profitability. Canola meals have emerged as a strong option that meets these needs effectively.
Canola meals are widely used in dairy diets and are supported by strong research. Studies over the years have shown that cows fed with canola meal produce more milk, with increases ranging from about 1.5 to over 5 pounds per cow per day. At the same time, milk urea nitrogen levels decrease, which indicates better use of protein and reduced waste.
“Nutritionists today are not simply formulating protein — they’re evaluating ingredients for their contribution to amino acids and energy needs,” said Essi Evans, Ph.D., E+E Technical Advisory Services. “Canola meal offers a balanced amino acid profile along with a meaningful energy contribution. That combination allows us to optimize both sides of the ration equation.”
One important advantage of canola meals is its protein quality. It contains a good amount of rumen undegradable protein, meaning more protein escapes digestion in the rumen and becomes available to the cow.
This helps improve milk production without increasing nitrogen loss. Its amino acid profile is also well balanced and closely matches the needs of dairy cows. This reduces the need for additional supplements and improves overall efficiency.
Energy is another key benefit. Traditional values often underestimate the energy contribution of canola meals. New research shows that its energy supply is like soybean meals when measured more accurately. It also supports better fiber digestion and may help reduce methane production, which is beneficial for sustainability.
In early lactation, replacing soybean meals with canola meals has shown strong results. Cows produce significantly more milk without negative effects on body condition or reproduction. This shows that canola meals support cows efficiently rather than increasing stress.
Overall, canola meals provide a combination of protein quality and energy that helps improve milk production and reduce feed waste. This leads to better income over feed cost, making it a valuable ingredient for modern dairy farming.
