Gophers causing growing frustration in rural areas
With gopher populations increasing across Saskatchewan, many landowners are struggling with crop loss and land damage. These rodents not only reduce crop yields but also create dangerous conditions for livestock. In response, the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF), supported by the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM), is offering a solution.
The SWF has launched a program to connect affected landowners with trusted SWF members who are trained to handle gopher control responsibly. This initiative ensures that help is provided in a safe, ethical, and effective manner. Landowners who need assistance can contact the SWF office at 306.692.8812. The SWF will then work to match them with nearby members who are available to help.
All participating SWF members have an extra $5 million in liability insurance, giving landowners peace of mind. These members are also expected to follow strict standards, including safety, professional behaviour, and respect for property.
“We recognize the growing frustration gophers are causing in rural areas, particularly as they damage crops and create hazards for livestock,” said Darrell Crabbe, SWF Executive Director. “We’re proud to support our members in being part of the solution—helping our landowners while maintaining ethical hunting practices.”
This initiative offers practical help to those affected by gophers while also promoting ethical wildlife management. It also helps preserve the health of Saskatchewan’s agricultural lands by addressing a growing concern through community cooperation and responsible action.
For more information or to request assistance, landowners are encouraged to contact the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation directly at 306.692.8812.
