Farmers can nominate hardworking dogs and win prizes by July 11
Farmers and ranchers are invited to take part in the 2027 Farm Dog of the Year contest. This program recognizes the important role that farm dogs play in daily agricultural life. The contest is organized by the American Farm Bureau Federation and supported by Nestlé Purina PetCare.
“Farm dogs are often important partners in our daily work as well as wonderful companions for farm families,” said AFBF President Zippy Duvall. “As we saw with our 2026 winner, Max, these loyal companions go above and beyond to look after both the land and the farm families they work alongside.”
This is the ninth year of the competition, which highlights how farm dogs assist with work and provide companionship to farm families. Tasks such as rounding up livestock, guarding property, carrying tools, and welcoming visitors are some of the valuable contributions made by these animals.
The grand prize winner will receive $5,000 and a year’s supply of Purina Pro Plan dog food. The winning dog will also be honored at an award ceremony during the American Farm Bureau Convention scheduled for January 2027 in North Carolina. In addition, the winning dog will be featured in a professionally produced video to share its story.
“We are honored to continue supporting the hard-working, devoted farm dogs featured in the American Farm Bureau’s Farm Dog of the Year contest,” said Jack Scott, vice president of sustainable sourcing at Purina. “Purina proudly uses nutritious ingredients sourced from American farms to make our pet food, and we remain committed to supporting American farmers who have fed generations of people and pets.”
Farm dogs will be judged based on their helpfulness, obedience, and playful nature. Farmers who wish to participate must be members of the Farm Bureau. Those interested in joining can apply through the official website before submitting their nomination. Entries must include written responses, at least one photo, and an optional video. The final date for submission is July 11, 2026.
The contest also includes the People’s Choice Pup category. Selected dog profiles will be shared online, and the public will vote for their favorite. The winner of this category will receive two thousand $5,000 and recognition.
Scientific research conducted by the Mayo Clinic in collaboration with Purina shows that spending time with dogs can reduce stress and improve well-being. These findings further support the emotional and practical value of farm dogs.
