USDA Program Supports Soil Health Practices Already Widely Used
Regenerative agriculture is becoming increasingly common across American farms and ranches. New data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows that regenerative practices were used on nearly 40 million acres in fiscal year 2023, a rise of more than 360% compared to a decade earlier.
USDA recently introduced the $700 million Regenerative Pilot Program to encourage farmers and ranchers to adopt conservation practices that improve soil health and water quality. The funding is being delivered through two major conservation programs that support working agricultural lands.
Many of the practices included in the program are already familiar to producers. Farmers have voluntarily adopted methods such as grazing management, cover crops, nutrient management, pest management systems, conservation crop rotations, and reduced tillage for many years.
Among these practices, grazing management remains the most widely used. These systems help producers manage livestock, pasture conditions, and soil resources while meeting conservation goals. Other commonly adopted practices include nutrient management programs that improve fertilizer efficiency and pest management systems that help reduce unnecessary crop protection applications.
Cover crops also continue to gain popularity. They help reduce soil erosion, improve organic matter, increase water infiltration, support wildlife habitat, and suppress weeds.
The USDA also reported that conservation efforts extend far beyond regenerative practices alone. In fiscal year 2023, farmers, ranchers, and conservation partners implemented USDA-supported conservation activities on nearly 70 million acres nationwide.
Many producers invest in conservation through private initiatives, state programs, or their own resources. These efforts reflect a long-term commitment to protecting soil, water, air quality, and wildlife habitat while maintaining productive farms.
Agricultural organizations continue to support voluntary conservation approaches that allow farmers to choose practices suited to their operations. Because every farm is different, regenerative and traditional farming methods are often used together to improve productivity, environmental stewardship, and economic sustainability.
The continuing growth of regenerative agriculture highlights the commitment of American farmers and ranchers to responsible land management and continuous improvement.
