Includes Support for Initiatives Generating Data for Drone-Based Pesticide Applications
During the Agriculture Ministers meeting held last week, Ministers reviewed progress on implementing the Federal, Provincial, and Territorial (FPT) Action Plan developed by the FPT Pesticide Management Working Group.
The action plan is built around three key themes designed to improve pesticide management in Canada while supporting farmers and agricultural innovation.
The first theme focuses on enhancing engagement and collaboration in pesticide risk assessments. Governments and agencies affected by pesticide decisions will be encouraged to participate earlier in the Pest Management Regulatory Agency’s (PMRA) review process.
Pilot projects will help collect better information, improve value assessments, and support more accurate regulatory decisions. Provinces and territories will also explore new tools and information-sharing systems to help strengthen the assessment process.
The second theme recognizes the importance of pest management tools for Canadian agriculture. The plan highlights the need to consider the value of pesticides when making regulatory decisions.
Provinces and territories will work with growers and agricultural representatives to identify practical alternatives when products face restrictions or cancellation. Additional expertise and socio-economic information may also be provided to support stronger value assessments and better-informed decisions.
The third theme aims to increase access to integrated pest management solutions, including biopesticides and lower-risk products. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) will support initiatives such as generating data for drone-based pesticide applications, identifying regulatory barriers, and improving information sharing.
Efforts will also continue to address international trade barriers and help smaller businesses navigate Canada’s pesticide regulatory system.
Research and knowledge transfer remain important priorities under the plan. Continued support will be provided for biopesticides, minor-use products, precision agriculture, integrated pest management practices, and other innovative technologies.
Governments will also explore funding opportunities and strengthen information sharing to encourage the adoption of new pest control solutions across the country.
