Innovation and technology help farmers tackle rising pressures
Farmers are dealing with several complex challenges in 2026 that are shaping the future of agriculture. Industry experts say successful innovation must focus on solving real farm problems rather than introducing technology without a clear purpose. This according to the Upper Midwest Regional Agriculture Pain Point Report outlining farmers’ biggest challenges released by Grand Farm.
One of the biggest challenges is weed control. Herbicide-resistant weeds continue to spread, making traditional control methods less effective. As a result, companies are developing new solutions, including advanced machinery, robotics, and precision tools that can identify and remove weeds more accurately.
Another major concern is the early detection of pests and crop diseases. Delayed identification often limits farmers' ability to protect crops and reduce losses. New monitoring systems and precision agriculture technologies are helping growers detect problems sooner and make better management decisions.
Poor drainage and excess soil moisture also remain significant issues. Wet field conditions can delay planting and field operations while reducing crop performance. Farmers are increasingly looking for technologies and management practices that improve water movement and field accessibility.
The report also highlights challenges related to nutrient management, labor shortages, and rising production costs. Increasing fertilizer prices and other farm inputs have put additional pressure on profitability. To address these concerns, growers are adopting precision agriculture tools that improve fertilizer efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize crop performance.
Agricultural innovation hubs and research organizations are working closely with equipment manufacturers, technology companies, universities, and startups to test practical solutions under real farming conditions. These partnerships help ensure that new products provide measurable benefits before reaching farms.
Artificial intelligence is also gaining attention across the agricultural industry. While AI offers opportunities to improve efficiency and decision-making, experts believe it should be viewed as one tool among many. Technologies are most effective when they address specific farming challenges and are supported by sound management practices.
“You hear about these startups that want to co-create and have been around five-plus years now and are gaining traction,” said Dr. William Aderholdt, executive director of US-based agtech innovation hub Grand Farm. “A lot of that shared story is that they’re working with farmers, and they want farmers to be involved in the innovation.”
Industry leaders note that there is no single solution capable of solving every agricultural problem. Long-term success will come through a combination of innovations, including improved farming practices, precision technologies, automation, and crop management strategies.
