Farmers have once again taken to Agriville.com to share their thoughts on the latest Canola news
Canadian farmers took to Agriville.com to share their thoughts on canola futures reaching their highest weekly close since October 2023.
While some were feeling hopeful, many remained cautious—wondering how much higher prices might go and what’s really behind the rally.
The thread started with a question: how much better would prices be if China hadn’t added new tariffs on Canadian canola oil and meal?
While the seed itself wasn’t hit with tariffs, farmers agreed the news still affected the market.
One guessed prices could be $25 per tonne higher, while others thought today’s price was already fair given the situation.
Some farmers pointed to recent trade numbers showing that China bought a large amount of Canadian canola oil just before the tariff announcement—131,205 metric tonnes in the first three months of 2025, the most since 2022.
At the same time, they brought in over 1 million tonnes of canola seed.
One farmer summed it up by saying, “Looks like China played the market the way they always do.”
Others felt that earlier price drops were overdone.
The July contract had fallen to around $573.00, and many saw the rebound as the market correcting itself. “It was a panic-driven sell-off,” one farmer said, adding that fears about tariffs had caused prices to drop too far, too fast.
As the conversation shifted, farmers began to talk about strategy.
With investment funds holding about 80,000 canola contracts, some wondered where prices might hit resistance next.
Several pointed to levels between $720 and $855 per tonne.
Many agreed it was smart to sell in small amounts during price rallies, especially with so much still unknown about weather and market conditions.
One user said that if current dry conditions continue, it could push prices even higher. “Who knows where the top is,” they wrote.
In the end, farmers seemed glad to see prices recovering but stayed realistic. Between global politics, weather concerns, and market uncertainty, no one’s letting their guard down just yet.
