In March, the American pork industry asked Canada for its own tariff exemption.
The National Pork Producers Council wrote a letter to the Ministry of Finance asking to be spared from any potential retaliatory tariffs.
“This two-way trade is mutually beneficial for our countries and for producers and consumers alike,” the letter reads. “In contrast, escalating trade wars will produce no winners. A trade war will leave the North American pork sector weaker and more fragmented.”
In February, the Canadian government announced plans to put tariffs on $125 billion of U.S. goods, including pork.
As of September, the standard tariff rate for pork is back at zero.
