Crop tour finds lower corn yields as global supply worries support prices

Recent crop tour findings showed lower corn yields in several major producing states, including Illinois and parts of Iowa. The results were lower than last year's levels and below recent averages in many areas. These findings increased concerns about available grain supplies ahead of harvest.

Illinois, one of the top corn-producing states in the United States, reported significantly lower corn yield estimates compared to 2025 and the recent three-year average. Soybean pod counts in the state were slightly lower than last year but remained above average.

In Iowa, crop tour scouts found mixed results across several districts. Corn yields were generally lower than a year ago, while soybean pod counts remained at or above historical averages in many locations.

Supply concerns are not limited to the United States. Europe has experienced extreme summer heat, reducing crop production expectations. In addition, disruptions in the Black Sea region have slowed grain exports from a major global supplier, creating further uncertainty for world markets.

The stronger corn market helped lift agricultural commodity prices overall. However, analysts note that the $5 per bushel level could encourage additional farmer selling, which may increase grain availability and limit further price gains before harvesting.

Weather remains an important factor. Forecasts call for scattered rainfall across parts of the Midwest and Plains, although many areas are expected to receive only limited moisture. Above-normal temperatures are also expected in some regions.

As harvest approaches, markets will be closely watching actual field yields, export demand, ethanol usage, and global trade conditions. These factors will determine whether recent price gains can continue.

For producers facing high input costs, stronger commodity prices provide an opportunity to improve margins. Marketing decisions regarding storage, sales timing, and risk management will remain important in the weeks ahead.
