Global supply disruptions continue to pressure farm input markets
According to a new report from CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange, farmers may continue facing higher fertilizer costs for the next several years as global supply issues and international conflicts keep nutrient markets under pressure.
Industry analysts expect fertilizer prices to remain above historical levels through 2028, even though they have eased from previous record highs. The market continues to be affected by supply chain disruptions, limited raw material availability, and uncertainty in key fertilizer-producing regions.
The Middle East remains an important supplier of fertilizer products and raw materials to global markets. Any disruption in the region can affect the movement of nutrients such as sulfur, ammonia, and urea, which are critical for fertilizer production. Reduced production capacity and transportation challenges have increased concerns about long-term supply availability.
“The ripple effect of the Middle East conflict, compounded with tight supplies, will create higher fertilizer prices and complicate sourcing well into 2027 and beyond,” said Jacqui Fatka, farm supply and biofuels economist with CoBank.
She added, “Availability and affordability concerns have already triggered demand destruction and deferral, making the price outlook increasingly difficult to predict. Ultimately, market recovery will depend on stabilization in the Middle East, lower sulfur prices and shifts in global demand patterns.”
Phosphate fertilizers are expected to face some of the strongest pricing pressures. Rising costs for sulfur and ammonia, both major inputs used in phosphate production, have tightened global supplies. Export restrictions in some producing countries have added further uncertainty to the market.
Around the world, fertilizer production has also been affected by plant shutdowns, reduced operating rates, and infrastructure damage. These challenges have reshaped global trade flows and made sourcing fertilizer more difficult for agricultural retailers and cooperatives.
Despite elevated costs, many growers continue to apply nutrients to protect crop yields. Instead of making major reductions, producers are increasingly using soil testing, variable-rate technology, and precision nutrient management practices to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
Some farmers have lowered phosphate and potassium applications while maintaining nitrogen use. Experts warn that long-term reductions in nutrient applications could eventually impact soil fertility and crop performance.
If fertilizer prices remain high into future growing seasons, growers may delay purchases or shift applications to spring. This could create additional logistical challenges for retailers while increasing uncertainty across the agricultural supply chain.
Market conditions are expected to depend on future improvements in global trade, fertilizer production capacity, and overall stability in key supply regions. Until then, fertilizer costs are likely to remain a significant concern for farmers and agribusinesses.
