Producers invited to share insights on new climate smart BMP adoption

A new intake for the On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) will open in 2026 for Ontario farmers, focusing on cost-share opportunities that support the adoption of innovative best management practices.

Program organizers are requesting feedback from producers to better understand interest, awareness, and readiness to adopt three climate-smart practices. This outreach aims to ensure that upcoming funding reflects real on-farm needs and helps improve the success of future environmental initiatives.

The survey highlights three emerging BMPs that may play an important role in climate-focused agriculture. The first is biological inoculant products, which support nitrogen fixation in field crops and may help farmers reduce fertilizer use. The second is biochar application, a soil amendment that can improve soil structure, water retention, and long-term carbon storage. The third involves additives for liquid manure storage, designed to support acidification and potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Producers are encouraged to complete the short 5–8-minute survey by December 19, 2025. In appreciation, respondents will be entered for a chance to win one of three $50 Esso gift cards.

Winners will be randomly selected on or around December 22, 2025, and will be contacted by phone and email. They will have five business days to reply with an Ontario mailing address before an alternate winner is chosen. Gift cards will be mailed within seven business days after confirmation.

Take the survey now.

Input gathered through this survey will help shape the 2026 intake and guide future support for BMP adoption. By sharing their experiences and needs, producers play an important role in strengthening climate solutions on farms across the region.

This project is supported through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada under the Agricultural Climate Solutions – On-Farm Climate Action Fund program.

I’m Phil Hord, and I’m excited to kick off my first episode as host on The Swine it Podcast Show. It’s a privilege to begin this journey with you. In this episode, Dr. John Deen, a retired Distinguished Global Professor Emeritus from the University of Minnesota, explains how pandemic threats continue to shape U.S. swine health and production. He discusses vulnerabilities in diagnostics, movement control, and national preparedness while drawing lessons from ASF, avian influenza, and field-level epidemiology. Listen now on all major platforms.

"Pandemic events in swine systems continue to generate significant challenges because early signals often resemble common conditions, creating delays that increase spread and economic disruption."
