Province highlights farmers and food businesses June 1 to 7
Local Food Week began on Monday, June 1 and runs until June 7, 2026 -- celebrating the important role of farmers, food processors, and agribusinesses in Ontario, providing safe, healthy, and high-quality food for families while supporting the province’s economy.
The government is highlighting to consumers that buying food grown and made in Ontario helps protect the food supply and support local jobs. It also helps build a stronger and more self-reliant agri-food sector.
“A strong local food supply is critical to the security of our province. When we choose to buy food grown and made in Ontario, we are helping to protect Ontario’s food independence,” said Trevor Jones, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness. “Thank you to the farmers, food processors and people across the sector whose world-class food helps feed our province and the world.”
This year, the 2026 Local Food Report draws attention to the International Year of the Woman Farmer. It recognizes women leaders and their strong contribution to Ontario’s food system. The report also highlights successful businesses and organizations that are improving the local food supply chain.
The media release featured several featured stories showing how innovation and local sourcing are helping the sector grow. Penokean Hills Farms represents five beef farmers who developed a Simmental Angus brand to support regional business.
Produce Express connects more than 300 local producers with school nutrition programs.
King Cole Ducks stands as Canada’s largest duck producer and a family run, women led business.
Taco House Co shows how businesses can shift from importing to sourcing food locally.
Local Food Week also celebrates the Foodland Ontario Retailer Awards. Around 60 grocery stores are recognized for creative displays that promote fresh Ontario fruits and vegetables. These efforts help consumers choose seasonal and locally grown food.
"Supporting Ontario produce and buying local has long been central to our approach at Metro and Food Basics. During Local Food Week, we’re proud to celebrate the incredible work of Ontario’s farmers and producers, and to partner with Foodland Ontario to bring fresh, locally grown food to our customers. We’re especially proud of our store teams across the province, whose creativity and dedication help showcase the best of Ontario produce every day," said Paul Bravi Executive Vice President of Ontario, METRO Inc.
Foodland Ontario continues to support awareness through its logo and local food map, making it easier for people to identify and buy local products. Consumers are encouraged to shop at farmers markets or buy directly from farms whenever possible.
Encouraging consumers to buy local is more important than ever.
