14-year-olds can operate equipment with a Class 8 license

Farms.com continues its tour across Canada diving into the insurance and licensing requirements for farm equipment.

This article focuses on Nova Scotia.

Is a license mandatory to operate farm equipment in Nova Scotia?

If the tractor or other piece of machinery remains on private land, a license isn’t necessary.

If the equipment travels on public roads, licensing becomes a requirement.

Operators can have one of three licenses, Nova Scotia law says.

A Class 3 is for adults 18 and older and allows drivers to operate a single vehicle over 14,000 kg gross vehicle weight.

A Class 5 license is Nova Scotia’s standard driver’s license and can be earned by people at least 16 years old.

People as young as 14 can drive farm equipment with a Class 8 license.

This license only allows for operation of farm tractors weighing 14,000 kgs or less.

In addition, Endorsement 15 or 23 is required to tow equipment behind farm machinery.

Temporary foreign workers need a Class 8 license if the equipment travels on public roadways.

Is insurance mandatory for farm equipment in Nova Scotia?

Insurance isn’t required when operating farm equipment in the province whether on private or public land.

Having insurance is, however, highly recommended to protect oneself from potential liability and damage.

In addition, lenders like major banks, and the Nova Scotia Farm Loan Board, require proof of insurance as part of a financing agreement.

Insurance providers like Duliban Insurance and AA Munro Insurance can help Nova Scotia farmers develop complete insurance solutions to protect assets including homes and equipment.

In addition, the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture has an existing relationship with BrokerLink to support farmers with their insurance needs.

And since each farm is unique, producers are encouraged to contact insurance providers directly to begin these important conversations.
