Retaliatory tariffs often hit Prairie ag, Premier Moe said

Some of Canada’s premiers touched on U.S. trade issues and their relation to agriculture Monday ahead of three days of meetings at Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ont.

Answering a question from a reporter about Chinese tariffs affecting Saskatchewan, Premier Scott Moe highlighted how ag is involved.

“Agriculture is at the centre of those as we speak,” he said. “There needs to be a broader effort on trade in general with China. All too often retaliatory measures from China do land impacting Saskatchewan and Prairie agriculture.”

Quebec Premier François Legault gave remarks which included protections for the dairy sector.

“For us in Quebec there’s no (chance) about negotiating supply management for dairy and other products,” the premier said, adding that any new deal with the U.S. must have a timeframe attached.

Prime Minister Carney will join the premiers in Huntsville later this week to provide updates on the current trade talks with the U.S.

Canada and Washington are trying to reach a new trade deal by Aug. 1.

Beginning on that date, the U.S. will charge a 35 per cent tariff on Canadian imports.

At a time when disease pressure continues to challenge pork production systems across the United States, vaccination remains one of the most valuable and heavily debated tools available to veterinarians and producers.

Speaking at the 2025 Four Star Pork Industry Conference in Muncie, Indiana, Dr. Daniel Gascho, veterinarian at Four Star Veterinary Service, encouraged the industry to return to fundamentals in how vaccines are selected, handled and administered across sow farms, gilt development units and grow-finish operations.

Gascho acknowledged at the outset that vaccination can quickly become a technical and sometimes tedious topic. But he said that real-world execution, not complex immunology, is where most vaccine failures occur.
