Keep Pulses Market Safe from Residues

Canadian pulse farmers are strongly advised against using glufosinate-ammonium on pulse crops according to Keep it Clean.

Though certain generic glufosinate products are registered for use on lentils in western Canada, experts warn they should not be applied due to significant trade risks.

Using glufosinate on any other pulse crop in the region is strictly illegal.

Glufosinate carries a high risk of trade disruption because many export markets either do not have maximum residue limits (MRLs) set for this herbicide or set them extremely low. When Canadian pulses exceed those MRLs, shipments may be rejected, causing serious market losses.

Maintaining market access for Canadian pulse crops requires strict adherence to pesticide guidelines. Growers must use only approved pesticides and always read and follow the product label, paying close attention to application rates, timing, and the pre-harvest interval.

The Canadian pulse industry exports products to over 130 countries. Each country sets its own MRLs, which may differ from Canadian standards. This makes it even more important for farmers to follow safe pesticide use practices to avoid export issues.

To protect the reputation and success of Canadian pulses on the global stage, every grower must commit to responsible pesticide use. The use of unapproved herbicides like glufosinate on pulse crops not only risks individual farm profits but also the entire sector's ability to access key markets.

By carefully choosing the right pesticides and following regulations, Canadian farmers help ensure their products meet the standards of international buyers. This protects both their livelihood and the future of the pulse industry.

Always check pesticide labels, stay informed about export requirements, and make smart choices for your crops and your markets.
