How Proper Animal Handling Can Improve Farm Workplace Safety

Safe livestock handling remains a critical part of farm operations, helping protect both workers and animals from unnecessary injuries and stress.

According to Linda M. Fetzer and Florence Becot of Penn State Extension, understanding animal behavior and following proper handling practices can create a safer environment for everyone involved.

Animals including cattle, sheep, goats, horses, swine, and poultry can react unpredictably if they feel threatened or uncomfortable. One key concept in livestock management is the “flight zone,” which refers to the animal’s personal space.

Entering that space too quickly or aggressively may cause the animal to move away, panic, or become defensive. The size of this zone often varies depending on the species and the animal’s familiarity with people.

Experts recommend using calm and patient handling methods rather than loud noises or force. Livestock typically respond better to slow movements and steady guidance.

Farmers are also encouraged to pay attention to warning signs such as pawing, tail flicking, vocalization changes, or sudden movement, which may indicate fear or agitation.

Since animal behavior can change due to illness, stress, or past experiences, handlers should remain alert and avoid turning their backs on livestock.

Farm injuries involving animals may include kicks, bites, crushing accidents, or trampling incidents. Other hazards can come from slippery barn floors, unsafe gates, and equipment with moving parts or pinch points.

Wearing durable footwear, keeping workspaces clean, and maintaining an escape route in confined areas can improve safety.

The guidance also stresses the importance of preventing zoonotic diseases through proper sanitation, protective clothing, gloves, and respiratory protection, particularly in poultry facilities.
