The U.S. ag industry and Xochitl Torres Small will find out on Monday whether the full Senate supports her nomination to be the next deputy secretary of agriculture.

The Senate will reconvene at 3:00pm on July 10 to resume her consideration, the Senate Republican Policy Committee’s website says.

Then, at 5:30pm, “the Senate will proceed to a roll call vote on the motion to invoke cloture on the Small nomination.”

Invoking cloture limits further consideration of a pending proposal to 30 hours in order to end a filibuster.

Torres Small last appeared in front of the Senate ag committee on May 10.

President Biden nominated Torres Small in February following the resignation of Dr. Jewel Bronaugh.

Torres Small, who also serves as the under secretary for rural development, has received support from multiple industry groups, including 50 ag organizations who signed a letter in March.

And on July 7, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), put out a statement in support of Torres Small’s confirmation.

“LULAC strongly supports the confirmation of Torres Small at a time when our nation’s agricultural industry is dealing with the historic effects of climate change,” Domingo Garcia, national president of LULAC, said in the statement.

Anyone interested in watching the floor proceedings can watch them live.
