Spring event shares training tools and predator control strategies

A spring livestock event will bring producers together to learn effective ways to protect sheep and goats from predators. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is organizing its annual Livestock Guardian Dog Field Day in San Angelo, offering a full day of learning and practical demonstrations.  The 9th annual Spring Livestock Guardian Dog, LGD, Field Day will take place on May 1 in San Angelo, Texas, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The program is designed to support livestock producers in managing predation, which remains one of the biggest challenges in sheep and goat farming. Experts highlight that predator-related losses continue to increase in many regions, making preventive strategies more important than ever.

The event will take place at a research and extension center and will run throughout the day. It will include educational sessions, live demonstrations, and opportunities for participants to interact with experienced producers and specialists. Registration is required, and participants are encouraged to sign up in advance.

“The biggest single loss in sheep and goat production is predation,” said Jake Thorne, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension sheep and goat specialist and assistant professor, Department of Animal Science, San Angelo. “The problem is not going away, and, in many areas, it’s increasing.”

Field day will cover several important topics. These include the use of virtual fencing to manage livestock, understanding the economics of using guardian dogs, and the latest GPS tracking technologies for monitoring animal movement. Sessions will also focus on bonding and training livestock guardian dogs, which is essential for their effectiveness in protecting herds.

In addition to expert talks, attendees will benefit from a ranch tour where they can observe working guardian dogs in real conditions. A producer panel will share practical experiences and insights, helping participants learn from real-life challenges and solutions. Vendors and breeders will also be present, providing further information and resources.

The event is especially useful for new livestock guardian dog owners or those with limited experience. It offers a chance to gain knowledge, ask questions, and explore new tools that can improve livestock safety.

Overall, the field day aims to equip producers with the skills and information needed to reduce losses and strengthen livestock management practices through the effective use of guardian dogs.
