Discussions highlight trade barriers and export growth

U.S. dairy industry leaders gathered this week with Luke Lindberg, Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for a constructive meeting focused on trade and market opportunities. The session brought together dairy farmers, processors, executives, and association leaders to discuss current challenges and the industry’s export potential.

“USDA is committed to securing fair and reciprocal trade agreements around the world, spurring dairy business growth here in America,” said Lindberg. “The farmers and processors I met with are critical to our work in this area, and we’ll continue to listen and partner with them as we strengthen the industry at home and in the international marketplace.”

The Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA), which represents over 850 dairy businesses worldwide, presented its three-part Trade Policy Plan created in Spring 2025. Members highlighted the importance of tackling tariffs, supporting the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), and seeking new trade negotiations.

“Under Secretary Lindberg’s focus on opening new markets and reducing trade barriers to American dairy farmers and processors is very encouraging, as the industry faces regulatory and economic pressures,” said John Umhoefer, Executive Director of WCMA. “New export opportunities are the engine of future dairy growth, allowing continued diversity in dairy product offerings and strengthening rural economies in dairy states across the U.S.”

The Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin (DFW) also took part, sharing recent successes in promoting Wisconsin dairy products globally. DFW CEO Chad Vincent welcomed the Under Secretary and praised his strong grasp of issues affecting agricultural trade. He expressed optimism for future collaboration to expand Wisconsin’s global presence.

The meeting underscored the shared goals of industry leaders and federal officials: increasing U.S. dairy exports, easing trade barriers, and ensuring American farmers and processors remain competitive worldwide.
