USDA report shows slight decline in hog numbers nationwide

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports that as of September 1, 2025, there were 74.5 million hogs and pigs on U.S. farms. This total is 1 percent lower than September 2024 but 1 percent higher than June 1, 2025, showing a steady national inventory.

Of the total hogs and pigs, 68.5 million were market hogs and 5.93 million were kept for breeding. From June through August 2025, producers weaned 34.1 million pigs, a 3 percent drop compared to the same period a year earlier. During this time, U.S. farmers averaged 11.82 pigs per litter.

Looking ahead, hog producers intend to have 2.86 million sows farrow between September and November 2025 and 2.82 million between December 2025 and February 2026, suggesting stable breeding plans.

Iowa remains the top state for hog production with 25.1 million head. Minnesota follows with 8.75 million head and North Carolina ranks third with 7.80 million head.

To create an accurate estimate of the U.S. swine industry, NASS surveyed 4,479 operators nationwide in early September. Data were collected online, by mail, phone, and in person.

The full Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report, along with other NASS data, is available at nass.usda.gov, offering a detailed view of current trends for farmers, producers, and market analysts.
