New funding will help researchers convert agricultural and forestry byproducts into sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based materials.
The University of Guelph has received a $1-million gift from The WB Family Foundation to expand research into sustainable materials and support the continued growth of Ontario's bioeconomy.
The investment will support the University's Bioproducts Discovery and Development Centre (BDDC), a globally recognized research hub focused on creating environmentally friendly materials from renewable resources. Researchers are working to transform agricultural and forestry byproducts, agro-forestry residues and waste plastics into innovative alternatives to traditional petroleum-based materials used across industries.
The funding comes at a time when governments, businesses and consumers are increasingly seeking solutions that reduce waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions and support a more circular economy. Agricultural residues and renewable biomass are being viewed as important feedstocks for the next generation of sustainable products, offering new value-added opportunities for producers and rural communities.
"The work being carried out at the BDDC is becoming increasingly important in addressing the challenges associated with climate change and environmental stewardship," said Brian Beamish of The WB Family Foundation. "It also helps strengthen Canada's leadership in the growing bioeconomy and sustainable materials sector."
Established in 2008, the BDDC brings together researchers from a range of disciplines, including engineering, chemistry, physics, food science and plant science. Their collaborative research focuses on developing new biomaterials and advanced manufacturing technologies that can be used in applications ranging from automotive parts to packaging products.
For Ontario agriculture, research like this has the potential to unlock new markets for crop residues and other agricultural byproducts that historically have had limited economic value. As demand grows for sustainable materials, farmers could play an increasingly important role in supplying renewable feedstocks for manufacturing and industrial uses.
Dr. Amar Mohanty, director of the BDDC, said the donation will enhance the Centre's ability to advance innovation and attract leading researchers.
"This gift will greatly enhance our research capacity in developing sustainable materials, help attract talent and support innovations and new applied technologies for a more sustainable future," Mohanty said.
University of Guelph President Dr. Rene Van Acker noted that the investment reflects the strength of interdisciplinary research at the institution and will help accelerate solutions to some of the world's most pressing environmental challenges.

Ontario has increasingly positioned itself as a leader in bio-based innovation, with growing interest in technologies that convert agricultural and forestry resources into renewable fuels, chemicals and advanced materials. Research centres such as the BDDC play a key role in helping bridge the gap between scientific discovery and commercial applications.
Dr. John Cranfield, dean of the Ontario Agricultural College, said the Centre's work has earned international recognition and that the new funding will help expand its impact both economically and environmentally.
"The BDDC has built a global reputation for transforming agricultural and natural resources into innovative, sustainable solutions," Cranfield said. "This investment will strengthen the Centre's research capacity, accelerate discovery and support innovations that create environmental and economic benefits in Ontario, across Canada and around the world."
As industries continue to seek lower-carbon alternatives to conventional materials, the University of Guelph expects the investment to accelerate research that turns agricultural and natural resources into commercially viable products, helping strengthen both environmental sustainability and economic growth across the province.
