$32 million in USDA funding supports farmers markets and local food systems

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced $32.4 million in grant funding under the Local Agriculture Market Program to strengthen local and regional food systems across the country. The funding aims to help farmers, food businesses, and community groups expand market access and develop stronger food supply connections.

The funding is divided into three programs. The Farmers Market Promotion Program and the Local Food Promotion Program offer $27.68 million. These programs support projects that help farmers sell directly to consumers and through local businesses.

Examples include farmers markets, roadside stands, community-supported agriculture programs, agritourism, online marketplaces, food hubs, shared-use kitchens, and food incubators.

An additional $4.71 million is available through the Regional Food System Partnerships program. This funding supports public and private partnerships that build lasting relationships between farmers, food processors, distributors, and institutions such as schools and hospitals. These partnerships help improve access to fresh and locally produced food.

All programs under LAMP are managed by USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service and are funded through the 2018 Farm Bill. Applicants must provide a matching contribution equal to 25% of the federal funding requested. This requirement helps ensure shared investment and long-term success of funded projects.

Grant applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov by June 5, 2026. Late submissions will only be accepted in rare cases with documented extenuating circumstances. USDA is also offering free webinars to support new applicants and explain best practices for preparing successful proposals.

Through these grants, USDA continues its commitment to expanding market opportunities for American farmers while increasing consumer access to fresh, healthy, and locally produced food. The program plays a vital role in strengthening communities and supporting sustainable agriculture nationwide.
