Review will culminate in a revised Code by 2028

As many farmers will know, as part of the normal process for review, the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) has launched a comprehensive review of Canada’s Pig Code of Practice, last updated in 2014. The review was announced in May.

The process, expected to span three years, will culminate in a revised Code by 2028—one that reflects the latest scientific research, veterinary insights, and practical knowledge from the farm level.

A top-of-mind survey was conducted from May 15 to June 4, 2025, to help provide input from those in the industry. Committee virtual meetings have been held throughout the summer, and the first in-person meeting is expected to be held in the fall.

While pork producers may think it is a public relations initiative. It’s a rigorous, collaborative effort that brings together a diverse group of stakeholders, including scientists, veterinarians, producers, animal welfare advocates, government representatives, and retail partners.

The goal is to ensure that Canadian pork production continues to meet high standards for animal welfare while remaining practical and sustainable for producers. It is important for pork producers -- who work with the animals every day – ensure their voices are heard.

The NFACC’s approach is unique some say, blending independent science with real-world farming experience and consumer-facing perspectives. This ensures that the updated Code is not only evidence-based but also workable across the diverse realities of Canadian farms.

As the review progresses, producers are encouraged to stay informed and engaged. Experts advise pork producers to continue with excellent recordkeeping -- maintaining current training and care documentation will help ease the transition when new standards are implemented.

Pork producers are also encouraged to participate, when possible, throughout the process. Producers can contribute practical insights during consultations to help shape standards that balance animal welfare with operational realities.

The timing of this update is especially relevant. Producers are navigating a complex landscape that includes emerging disease threats, shifting trade dynamics, and evolving consumer expectations.

By participating in the review and preparing for changes, producers can help ensure the updated Pig Code supports both ethical animal care and the long-term viability of their operations.
