Alberta Wheat Commission Launches New Growing Guide for Winter Wheat
The Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) is pleased to announce the release of the “Winter Wheat Production Manual,” a project originally spear-headed by the former Alberta Winter Wheat Producers Commission but handed over to and completed by the AWC.
“We are very pleased to see the Winter Wheat Production Manual released,” says Rick Istead, general manager of the AWC. “The principles and advice given throughout the manual are based in solid, scientific evidence, and the manual covers production aspects such as sections on Marketing, Seeding Management, Weed Management, Diseases, etc.”
The manual includes a Calendar detailing numerous moments throughout the growing cycle and which easily conveys what a producer needs to be aware of at those times during the growing cycle, such as when the optimum seeding time for different regions of the province would be.
“The key to a successful production manual for any wheat variety depends upon the scientific grounding upon which the manual is based, the attention to detail in covering various aspects of the growing cycle, and the collective experience of those producing the manual,” says Istead.
“We view the release of the Alberta Wheat Commission’s ‘Winter Wheat Production Manual’ as yet another step towards knowledge sharing and industry development,” says Kent Erickson, Chair of AWC’s Board of Directors. “Our AWC mandate directs us to provide Alberta’s wheat producers with educational opportunities, including educational opportunities in marketing, production and scientifically-researched best practices. This new Winter Wheat manual goes a long way in helping Alberta’s farmers understand how to grow Winter Wheat in our province.”
Content for the Alberta Wheat Commission’s “Winter Wheat Production Manual” was researched and assembled by Dr. Linda Hall’s 2011 Cropping System Class in the University of Alberta’s Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science Department.
The 75-page manual is designed in full color with illustrative tables, charts, photos and other easily understood content.
