2019 Saskatchewan Agriculture Scholarship Applications Now Open

The theme ‘Our Food has a Story,’ is designed to get young people thinking about the relationship between agriculture and the food they eat.

Agriculture Minister David Marit says the scholarship program is all about encouraging youth interested in agriculture to take an active role in shaping the industry.

Students interested in applying for the scholarship must submit a creative three-minute video or a 1,000-word essay based on topics surrounding their food story.

One winning scholarship of $4,000 will be awarded, as well as three runner-up scholarships of $2,000 each.

The scholarship program is available to students in Grade 12 and/or recent graduates who are entering agriculture-related post-secondary studies in 2019.

Emma Hinz of Humboldt was the 2018 Saskatchewan Agriculture Student Scholarship winner.

“It (The scholarship) has allowed me to further my education and develop a deeper connection to the agriculture industry by sharing my voice.”

Emma Hinz is a Type 1 diabetic that also deals with celiac disease and wrote about the benefits of GMO insulin and how it has helped her.

“I had mentioned in my essay the advancements in GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms). It actually has been able to produce insulin for people just like me to access it safely and it’s available. It totally changed our lives and lets us live normal lives just like everyone else.”

Emma won the $4000 and is putting it towards her education in Animal BioScience.

The other runner-up scholarship winners for 2018 are Laura Carruthers of Frenchman Butte, Kati Culbertson of Redvers and Crystal Daniel of Avonlea.

Marit says Agriculture is a major employer and economic driver in our province and there are many exciting career opportunities to pursue.

Application forms are available here, the application deadline is March 1, 2019.

Video: A Farm Song (Busy) | Parody of A Bar Song (Tipsy) by Shaboozey

Lyrics:

My days begin with workin’, Alarm’s at 5 o’clock,
I Fill 5 gallon buckets, The feeders and the troughs,
This five to nine ain’t workin’, why the heck do I work so hard?,
I can’t worry ‘bout health problems, I can sleep in when I’m gone,

One, here comes the two to the three to the four,
Tell em’ ‘buy another cow, we need plenty more’,
Blue jeans are gettin’ dirty, what else could I ask for,
Oh my, more chores

Someone pour me up another shot of sweet tea,
They know me and working hard’s got a history,
There’s another flock of sheep that still needs feed,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,

Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,

I’ve been working pretty stressed but,
I ain’t changing for some cash,
Lord knows that I’m very blessed (More chores),
But I gotta say it’s hard,
Workin’ outside gettin’ charred,
Living out here on the farm, (more chores)

One, here comes the two to the three to the four,
Tell em’ ‘buy another cow, we need plenty more’,
Blue jeans are gettin’ dirty, what else could I ask for,
Oh my, more chores

Someone pour me up another shot of sweet tea,
They know me and working hard’s got a history
There’s another 20 chickens that still need feed,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,

Everybody on the farm getting’ busy,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,

Fun, here on ranch that’s what you can’t ignore,
Might be pretty hard but I love it to its core,
Flannel’s gettin’ dirty, what else could I ask for,
Oh my, more chores (Tell ‘em sing with me)

Someone pour me up another shot of sweet tea,
They know me and working hard’s got a history,
There’s another flock of sheep that still needs feed,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,
Someone pour me up another shot of sweet tea,
They know me and working hard’s got a history,
Watching cattle in the dark, don’t miss me,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,
(Yeeeeeehaw)
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,
It’s the best bro, go get yourself a farm
