Advancing Sustainable Agriculture: Long-Term Impact of Precision Nitrogen Management

Transforming Agriculture Through Smarter Nitrogen Use

Farmers have always been at the heart of progress. Today, Penn State researchers are working alongside them to develop next-generation nitrogen management tools that make every acre—and every decision—count. By combining science with practical solutions, Penn State is helping farmers strengthen their fields, protect their resources, and achieve long-term success in an evolving agricultural landscape.

Researchers in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences have developed powerful tools to help farmers make more accurate, efficient nitrogen decisions. Building on years of pioneering work, the latest updates combine practical resources with leading-edge science to support farmer success and protect valuable soil and water resources.

“Around the world, we have a lot of nitrogen pollution from agriculture coming from fertilizers or manure usage,” Charlie White, associate professor and extension specialist in soil fertility and nutrient management, said in a Penn State news story. “And it’s not all about farmer mismanagement. A lot of it has to do with a lack of tools available to farmers to accurately predict the correct amount of nitrogen that is needed for crops in any given year.”
