Female ag students can now apply for WIA scholarship

Applications are now being accepted for the 2025 Women in Agribusiness (WIA) Student Scholarship. This opportunity allows selected students to attend the annual WIA Summit, scheduled to take place in Orlando, Florida, from September 22 to 24, 2025. The scholarship covers event registration and accommodation, helping students explore professional pathways in agribusiness.

Each year, through the support of generous sponsors, the program provides over $100,000 in aid to students from accredited colleges and universities. The initiative helps young women gain exposure to the agribusiness sector, connect with mentors, and explore potential career options. Over the past 13 years, the program has awarded nearly $1.4 million, assisting almost 400 students interested in agricultural careers.

The scholarship is open to full-time students at all academic levels, from first-year undergraduates to doctoral candidates. While preference is given to junior and senior undergraduate students, others are encouraged to apply as well. Applicants must be studying an agriculture-related field. However, students from other majors may also apply if they can demonstrate how attending the summit aligns with their career goals.

The WIA Summit provides a rich environment for learning and networking. Attendees will take part in special events like student-only breakfasts, workshops, and meetings with sponsoring companies. Many past scholars have built strong professional relationships at the Summit that helped shape their careers.

“WIA taught me the importance of prioritizing and making space to be filled up by women on similar paths. When it comes to building a career within the male-dominated industries of agriculture and technology, female friendship has made all the difference,” said one previous participant, Anna Grace Goode.

“The connections allowed me to learn more about different paths in agribusiness… Not only did the women talk to me about their experience, but they were also more than happy to make introductions to people in their network. I have reached into that network in my current role to help my clients learn more about agribusiness in the United States and to find experts in different sectors,” said another scholar, Stefanie Bailey.

The deadline to apply is Sunday, July 13, 2025. More details on eligibility and application guidelines can be found on the WIA website.

Video: Women in Ag. The Promotion of Female Farmers through Social Media | Madalyn Thayer | TEDxBGSU

Less than 1% of Americans are farmers. The majority of those farmers are men. Many people have minimal experience with farms and agriculture. High schools are getting rid of their FFA programs and many colleges, including BGSU, do not have agricultural programs or classes. There is a new social media phenomenon where women are making content based on their farming endeavors and gaining lots of traction. Education is the one of the most important parts of agriculture, because the more people know the more they will emphasize with farmers and create policy that benefits everybody. Female farmers have taken to social media sharing their experience in the agricultural world. These women are breaking stereotypes and educating everyday citizens about farming which is extremely important for the future of agriculture. Madalyn is 19 years old and will be gradated with her bachelors degree in communication on December 2024. She lives on a farm and have spent lots of time working in agriculture. She has her own farmers market and love learning about all subjects, especially agriculture. She was on the BGSU Firelands Student government from 2021-2023 as a CCP Ambassador and was awarded the 3&1 communication excellency award in April of 2024. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
