Farmers’ Markets Ontario names new executive director

Farmers’ Markets Ontario (FMO) has announced that Melanie Anderson, Ottawa, will assume the role of executive director, effective April 1, 2026. FMO is the only official provincially recognized organization representing more than180 farmers’ markets across the province.

Melanie Anderson has built her career working at the intersection of farmers, market managers, municipalities, and tourism partners to strengthen vibrant local marketplaces. A farmers’ market leader for more than a decade, she brings extensive hands-on experience in vendor relations, market governance, funding development, and sector collaboration.

She understands both the day-to-day realities of operating small and volunteer-led markets and the broader policy and partnership frameworks that shape their success. Most recently, she represented Ontario as a delegate at the World Farmers Markets General Assembly in Rome, contributing to international dialogue on market sustainability and food systems. Going forward, she will focus on expanding member supports, strengthening provincial advocacy, and cultivating strategic partnerships that increase visibility, resilience, and economic opportunity for farmers’ markets of all sizes across Ontario.

FMO chair Elmer Buchanan said, “Melanie brings a strong understanding of the sector, a collaborative leadership style, and a clear commitment to supporting farmers’ markets and the communities they serve. Her experience will be instrumental as FMO continues its work to strengthen and advance the sector across Ontario.”
