Beef Producers Faced With Tough Decisions

It's a challenging time for Manitoba's beef sector.

Carson Callum is general manager of Manitoba Beef Producers.

"The main mood would be uncertainty," said Callum. "Some positive movements related to COVID-19 with the processing plants and such opening back up and getting up to speed as best as they can, however we're starting some regions with dry conditions again and folks are uncertain if they're going to get the rain they need to get that proper pasture stand to support their animals throughout the summer."

Callum says many producers will be making tough decisions in the weeks and months ahead.

"I'm sure there's producers weighing though decisions moving forward and I guess we'll have to see because definitely they could have some tough decisions if we go into the third year in a row of poor growing conditions for good pasture or good forage stands."

He notes the Interlake region is once again facing tough conditions for pasture regrowth.
