Bees And Canola

The relationship between bees and canola is a very strong, and healthy one.

Gregory Sekulic, Agronomy Specialist with the Canola Council of Canada, the biggest impact bees have is in pollinating seed production fields.

"It's in the seed stock that we grow all across Canada. The vast majority of that is grown in southern Alberta, and that uses about 80,000 or so colonies of managed honey bees. That makes the feed companies in Canada the number one user of pollination for feed services in Canada," he said. "Canola provides a pretty fabulous food source for bees. The pollen that it has, has a very balanced amino acid that really helps bees complete their life cycle. The nectar that it makes is very abundant and leads to very large honey flows. It's a very good honey producing crop because the volumes are quite high."

He added that even the shapes of the flower petals in canola are perfect for bees to land on.

Canola and bees are good for each other but when put together they are good for the health of our ecosystem and economy.
