Dairy Farmers of Canada Welcomes the National Food Security Strategy

Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) is encouraged by the Government of Canada’s National Food Security Strategy, which reflects a tangible commitment to strengthening our domestic food security and ensuring Canadians have stable access to homegrown food. As stated by Prime Minister Carney, “"A country that can’t feed itself, fuel itself, or defend itself isn’t truly sovereign."

DFC welcomes the government’s recognition of supply management within the strategy as “fundamental to Canadian self-sufficiency for dairy, egg, and poultry products at stable prices.”

Speeding up approvals for seed, feed, fertilizers and veterinary biologics may encourage more innovative products to enter the Canadian market, which can help increase productivity and competitiveness as well as provide urgently needed tools to maintain the health of animals. Support for intergenerational farm transfers recognizes the importance of keeping passing down family farms while also ensuring the sector remains accessible to future generations of farmers. Similarly, the commitment to promote Canadian food in public procurement is an important step toward strengthening domestic supply chains and supporting Canadian farmers and processors.  Each of these aspects are central to ensuring food security for Canadians.

“In an era of increasingly uncertain global trading relationships, Canada’s dairy farmers are proud to continue playing a fundamental role in supporting a strong and resilient food system by ensuring a stable supply of high-quality nutritious dairy produced on Canadian farms,” said David Wiens, President, Dairy Farmers of Canada.

We look forward to continuing to collaborate with the government and industry partners to boost domestic food security by producing the food Canadians love, right here at home.
