Dairy Innovation and Protein Demand Position U.S. Dairy Exports for Growth in 2027

Growing global demand for protein-rich dairy products and continued innovation across the dairy industry are creating new opportunities for Iowa dairy producers, as U.S. dairy exports are projected to remain strong in 2027.

According to USDA projections, U.S. dairy exports are expected to reach 20.7 billion pounds on a milk-fat basis and 49.3 billion pounds on a skim-solids basis in 2027. While exports of nonfat dry milk and whey products are forecast to soften, stronger shipments of butter and cheese are expected to support overall export demand.

Much of this growth is being driven by consumer interest in high-protein nutrition. Dairy products featuring protein claims now account for more than $10 billion in U.S. dairy sales, with growth significantly outpacing that of the broader dairy category. As consumers increasingly seek foods that support muscle health, healthy aging and weight management, dairy proteins remain a preferred ingredient due to their nutritional quality and versatility.

Emerging health trends are creating additional opportunities. Consumers using GLP-1 weight management medications, as well as aging adults focused on maintaining muscle mass, are looking for convenient, nutrient-dense foods. Innovative dairy products, including high-protein drinks, cultured dairy beverages and functional nutrition products, are helping meet these needs while reinforcing dairy’s role in healthy lifestyles.
